Equal status?

why do politicians get more money in their expense allowance, than the adverage fireman, nurse, police? Yet they (the government) discuss, the wrongs of giving these people who in my opinion are the salt of the earth, a 2-3% pay rise. Equal status..... what a load of........ what do you think?
