Find a Balance?

A child from my son's school was recently abducted and it's caused extreme panic among our community. This has also come at a most terrible time because my son is going through that "monster in the closet" stage and is constantly scared of strangers being in his room so much that he's been sleeping in our bed for the past week. i hate to see my kid who was once happy and social now anxious and scared. But as a parent i can't help but worry about child abductors. Any suggestions on who to keep children safe but not be too overpretective?
