What's the difference between a plasma and a LCD television?

My boyfrined is wanting a 42" flat panel for our bedroom and he is very indecisive. I need a straight forward answer on what the difference is and which is the better one. I'm tired of spending countless hours at electronics stores. Plus, any suggestions on where to go for best one or price?
