Can i send an SMS message to a phone in Ukraine via Yahoo Messenger?

My friend in Ukraine can send an SMS message to my USA phone (verizon wireless) but i am having trouble sending an SMS to her phone with Yahoo Messenger or my phone. Can anyone help in sending an SMS to a UA phone from USA?
