Uh. I would relate it back to the nitrogen cycle. Respiration by humans breaking down glucose to release energy and CO2 and how the plants do the reverse in photosynthesis taking in CO2 and generating glucose. Something like that. While the plants were dying out the oxygen levels were decreasing at a faster rate to that at which it was replinishing. Something along those lines. Hope I helped
