Want to become personal istant?

I will be moving to L.A. in a couple of months and I want to get a job before I start school in the January. I am only 19 and I want to become a personal istant for someone in the fashion industry. Would it be helpful if I just sent out letters and my resume to people and hope for a response or what should I do.
