What is the legal relationship between the people and the position of president.?

If someone can point me to federal statutes, cases, or code that reflects the legal laws and restrictions placed upon the executive position I would be very appreciative. I would like to understand in great detail if the position of President only answers in the legal sense to the legislative branch due to their powers to conviene an impeachment hearing, or if the position is bound to the same laws as [we] the people. Is there a specific statute or code that explains this. (NOTE: I am not making a political statement regarding the current administration, this is for my own knowledge)
