Why do so many take offense at the Irish language being called Gaelic?

I mean, the original word for the language is Gaeilge (Gaelic), not �ireannach (Irish). Referring to the language as "Irish Gaelic" avoids confusing it with the English language as spoken in Ireland and the Gaelic language as spoken in Scotland.
