Why are airfare's so expensive right now?

I have been browsing for airfare from LA to NY for the past couple of months and it has been very expensive compared to the past. Are fares going to change soon? Before the end of July that is? Should I hurry and buy now? I don't want to be ed out if you know what I mean.
